Biography
Simon Mills is the world's leading authority on HMHS Britannic — the third and largest of the Olympic-class sister ships, which sank in the Aegean Sea in 1916 while serving as a hospital ship. His book HMHS Britannic: The Last Titan is the definitive reference on the vessel, drawing on exhaustive archival research and direct involvement with expeditions to the wreck.
Mills holds a unique distinction in the maritime history world: he owns the intellectual property rights to the Britannic wreck site, a status that reflects both his exceptional depth of knowledge and his long-standing commitment to the ship's documentation and protection. This position has made him a central figure in all major expeditions to and research on the wreck.
His work challenges the lingering shadow of Titanic that has long obscured Britannic's own fascinating story — a vessel that was, in many respects, the most advanced of the three sisters, incorporating design improvements made in direct response to the Titanic disaster. Mills continues to research the ship and contribute to the growing body of knowledge about the Olympic class.
